Dean and Sonya Pennel

OWNERS

My name is Sonya Pennel, and I co-own Burn Boot Camp La Crosse with my husband of 23 years, Dean. Together we have three children, Davey (22), Ali (20) and Matthew (13). Since starting our family in the early 90’s, I found through the years that I became less healthy. Not only from a weight and physical fitness perspective, but also from a mental perspective. As my weight climbed, I found I became angry and short with most everyone including my husband, my children, my employees and most anyone who I came in contact with. I ballooned to 212 LBS. I was tired all of the time and although I knew I was a great person, I hated who I was. What had happened? It took some time to unravel it all. The start back to a healthy lifestyle came, not surprisingly, at an annual visit with my doctor when I found out my blood pressure was borderline high and if I didn’t get it under control myself, she was going to recommend daily medication. This doctor visit was the gentle start that I needed to reclaim my life by making a conscious decision to change the way I was eating. At that time, I was of the mindset that I would do one or the other, but not both eat right and exercise (wow I had a lot to learn!). The weight came off quickly and before long, I found I wanted to exercise. The three mile walks to and from work were just the beginning. Between the weight loss and the exercise, I felt the best I had felt since high school; and people noticed! I could feel that I was walking taller, with my head up, and a smile on my face! I was more approachable. And then came Burn Boot Camp. While I never personally was able to experience a Burn Boot Camp workout, my daughter who lives in Charlotte, North Carolina started working out there. She brought this opportunity home during a break from college and our whole family knew immediately that this was the right venture to bring to Wisconsin! I have so much to learn and a ways to go in my personal journey, but the Burn Boot Camp concept is exactly what our community needs!

Corbin Burkard

Head Trainer

My name is Corbin Burkard, and I am your Head Trainer! One of my biggest goals as your Head Trainer at Eau Claire is to create personal relationships with you all. When I first got into training a couple years ago, I didn’t realize how truly personal, being a personal trainer was. I have come to believe in my time training and coaching, that the more we can relate to each other on a personal level, the more fun we will have, and ultimately… see more results!

I grew up in Menomonie, WI where I first fell in love with exercise and weight lifting in high school. I was never a very big kid, so for me it was a way to better myself for sports. After seeing the results at a young age, I was absolutely hooked. My passion for sports (in particular football) took me to UW-Eau Claire to pursue a degree in Kinesiology. My eyes were again opened to a whole new way of exercising when I played football for UW-EC, and put on close to 50 pounds in a year (…I think mostly muscle… some of it was the cafeteria). When I was done playing, I realized weighing what I did was not the right fit for me, and that is when I was first truly introduced to high intensity interval training (HIIT) training. I lost about 40 pounds, and got in the best shape of my life. That was the moment I knew I wanted to train people, so you could see results, so you could have success, so you could find out so much about yourselves just like I did.

Right before I graduated from UW-EC with a Kinesiology major, and business administration minor, I received my Certified Personal Training license through the NSCA. I quickly began working as a trainer in the Eau Claire area, where I absolutely fell in love with the work. I did not realize what it would ever feel like to truly WANT to go to work the next day, I didn’t think that was a real thing! The opportunity for myself to work as a Head Trainer for Burn Boot Camp, in a community that I have grown up in, and come to love, is almost too good to be true!
