Staci’s Fitness Story at Burn Boot Camp

Fit Mom Forever -Staci Grimshaw – 54 LBS and Counting

“If anyone would have told me that in a matter of a year I would be 54 pounds lighter, be in amazing shape, and completed my very first 5k race, I would have laughed out loud.  Like many of us, I have gained and lost pound after pound.    At one point in my life I even topped the scale at 267 pounds.  To say that I was obsessed about my weight would be an understatement.  My unhealthy relationship with food, exercise, and weight started at a very young age.   It was an ugly secret that everyone knew but none of us talked about.  I was scale and number driven.  Honestly, I was scale and number obsessed.   I recently found a diary from my teenage years that only talked about my weight.  Not boys, school, or girlfriends.  The main theme was my weight.  Back then, I was a size 10 only 15 years old.

Last October, I reached a point where I knew things had to change. I had little energy and was pushing a size 20 to the point that I had to cut the elastic out of a pair of pants.  I found out that I was Pre-Diabetic and needed to see a Registered Dietitian.   She talked about healthy eating and exercise.  We had a plan. I got started that very next day.  The talk amongst several Moms was this new Boot Camp.   Although terrified, I knew I needed to try something.   I survived day one.  Day two I met Devan.   Already sore, he introduced me to the Bear Crawl.  That was when reality hit.  I physically couldn’t do it.  I went home, threw my keys and cried.  I was devastated.  I couldn’t believe what I had done to my body.  I was so embarrassed.   I emailed Devan and said thank you but this wasn’t for me.   He emailed me back and informed me that I had to focus on what I could do, not what I couldn’t.   He said that the next time I would be stronger.  After each workout, I would think to myself… I survived.   Tomorrow can’t be any harder than today.  So I kept on going.   Suddenly, Devan’s words started to come true.  I was stronger.   After a few short months, my sugar started to level off and I am now off all medicine.  I stay off that scale except for a monthly weigh in.  The hardest thing to overcome was the need to step onto the scale.  I don’t have those destructive feelings about myself anymore.   I have an amazing support system of family and friends.   I also have a husband that offered unlimited massages when muscles were screaming and two boys that cheer for me every step of the way.    When I started this journey, it was about losing weight not about getting fit or strong.  Getting fit and gaining strength have been a bonus.  Devan, Morgan and the ladies of BBC are wonderful.  We support and look out for each other.  We run next to each other when that 8th lap around the Post Office seems never-ending.   I still have a good bit to go and a bit more to accomplish.   However, I am well on my way.  What an amazing year!”
